Overview
Ubuntu for a web service, a dev box or your own stack. Pick an available image at checkout, then work over SSH or the browser console.
Connect over SSH, install packages, configure services. Full root access means the system and its software are yours to run.
Your public SSH key is on the machine at first boot, and no password is emailed. The browser console is there if SSH is not.
Take a snapshot before an upgrade. You can keep up to seven. Daily backups help recovery too; keep consistent database backups as well.
Workflow
Choose the image. Connect. Make it useful.
Select the region, the plan and an Ubuntu image from those on offer. This page does not preselect an operating system. Our guides use Ubuntu 24.04.
Use the SSH details in your dashboard or the browser console. Update, add a user, set up the firewall.
Install your software and enable its services. Back up application state and test a restore before a major upgrade.
A self-managed server gives you control of the software. These are the everyday jobs that come with it.
Add your SSH key, create a day-to-day user and confirm console access. Keep a recovery route before changing SSH settings.
Apply security updates, check the support lifecycle for your release and plan upgrades around your application’s dependencies.
Allow only the services you mean to publish. Test the firewall with your SSH session open, and keep databases off the public internet.

Yes. You administer your Linux VPS over SSH and the browser console. You are responsible for the packages, services and access controls you set up.
No Ubuntu Pro subscription or extra Canonical support is promised. Check the lifecycle and coverage for your release separately.
Yes, using Docker’s official instructions on a compatible release. It stays self-managed: review port exposure and firewall behaviour.
Unmetered means no per-GB transfer charge. It does not mean unlimited throughput, and the acceptable use policy applies.
